Early Treatment
The concept of "prevention" in dentistry often conjures up the images
of teeth cleaning and fluoride treatments. But much more important is
the application of knowledge of the whole oral system and being able to
visualize problems before they occur.
Some examples might include:
- Being aware of space problems in young children and anticipating
possible need for orthodontic treatment early when it can be done
more economically and utilize the child's growth to improve
the outcome.
- Detecting decalcified enamel and treating it conservatively
before it becomes decayed
- Encouraging improved home care to intercept potential gum
disease.
- Application of fluorides to help strengthen enamel against
decay.
- Sealing grooves in back teeth top prevent bacteria from getting
into areas not accessible to brushing.
- Recognizing bite problems that might result in injury to joints
and muscles later.
All prevention stems from vigilance at regular exams. This is why we
do a very thorough examination at every recare visit.
